Two Major Tips on Staying Healthy This Fall & Winter

9/17/2018

It is true: children are back to school and the weather is getting a little cooler.  You know what this means, right?  Fu and cold season approaches us.

Wait!  WHAT?  Cold and flu "season?" Seriously?

According to the CDC, flu "season" occurs from Nov - March.  And not just theflu, but the common cold, stomach "bugs," sore throats, and ear infections increase at this time of year.

Is taking your vitamin C, getting enough sleep, and hand washing really going to prevent these from occurring?

The one word answer is NO and this is why.

Each of these "sicknesses" (cold, flu, stomach "bugs," sore throats and ear infections) are the healing or recovery phases from a conflict shock.

This means that something was unexpected and distressing which causes a Biological Program to begin with the sole purpose of ensuring our survival.

This conflict shock occurs regardless if you're taking vitamin C, getting enough sleep and handwashing.

So why is there an increase in these symptoms at this time of year?  I have my hypotheses (I'm sure there are more) which are:
  • people (in general) don't like being cold,
  • they don't like big disruptions in their routines (which occur with inclement weather),
  • kids now have to go to school which is a source of many conflicts both for themselves as individuals, for their classrooms, and even for their parents.
  • the holidays are approaching and you know what that means: family and stress.

Any one of these can impact the psyche which then turns on a Biological Program that has physical symptoms in the healing phases including:
  • congestion/running nose
  • sore throat
  • vomiting
  • flu
  • earaches
If you'd like to know what the conflict shocks are for each of these, click the links above to read about each one.

Two tips on how to stay healthy this fall & winter
  • First: Recognize your own conflicts that are common to you at this time of year and then
  • Second: Downgrade or resolve each one as soon as possible.
Are your hands and feet cold? Are you obsessing about an issue in your head? Then you are Conflict Active.  Find a solution QUICK so your mind is at ease once again.

Some common conflict areas include:

School:
  1. Do your kids dislike their teacher?
  2. Are they being bullied?
  3. Too much homework?
Look at the areas of stress in their lives and work at neutralizing it with practical steps.
  1. Have a parent/teacher conference to work out your child's grievances;
  2. Involve administrators if your child is being bullied
  3. Hire a tutor to help with the tougher homework.
The sooner you are able to respond to your child and reach a solution, the quicker the Biological Program resolves which means the symptoms will be easier to manage. A slightly sore throat that is finished in one day, versus a painful one in which "strep" bacteria are helping it to heal.

Holidays:
  1. Are you upset because Aunt Flo is coming for the holidays?
  2. Do you hate the stress of the holidays?
  3. Do you worry that you don't have enough money to buy presents?
Recognize your "holiday" trigger and take practical steps to alleviate them.
  1. Ask a relative to keep Aunt Flo engaged on the other side of the room so you have minimal contact with her.
  2. Opt for going to the movies and go out for dinner instead of hosting everyone and their uncle for Christmas dinner. If you can't, then change your relationship to the holidays by reframing it in your mind.
  3. Homemade gifts can be wonderful if you have the time and skills to make them; or have other relatives chip in for that one special gift your spouse or child wants.
Weather:
  1. Tired of yet another snow or ice storm?
  2. Don't like being cold and having to put on 10 lbs of clothing and boots just to stay warm?
  3. Dislike driving in snow & ice?
Take a look at your "self-talk" - what you tell yourself throughout the next six months.  Once you identify a source of distress, take action to shift your perspective.
  1. Dust off those cross-country skis and intentionally psych yourself up for that next snowstorm with that perfect snow for skiing.
  2. Invest in the new lightweight gear that keeps you warm in sub-zero temps.
  3. Take a course in winter driving through your local driving school to boost your confidence.
Final note
These are suggestions to get you thinking of your potential triggers and also practical solutions.
While taking your vitamin C, getting enough sleep, and washing your hands are fine activities to do, they do not prevent an unexpected Conflict Shock with its subsequent Healing/Recovery Phase (which is what we call, 'being sick).

The number one thing to do to stay healthy is to recognize when you're upset and find a solution to it as soon as you can!
